A fascinating parallel connects German-born musicians Markus Geiselhart and Markus Harm:
despite being born ten years apart in Stuttgart, they both found their way to teaching at Vienna’s
prestigious mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts. Harm’s appointment as Professor of
Saxophone in 2022 followed Geiselhart’s arrival as an instructor for big band and ensemble
conducting by almost a decade. Joining this Viennese delegation is drummer David Panzl, whose
jazz experience enriches his role as a classical percussion teacher at the mdw since 2012. This
May, Cape Town will welcome these three artists to the South African College of Music at the
University of Cape Town for a week of teaching. The week will culminate in a special concert,
“Vienna visits Cape Town,” where they will share their compositions and arrangements alongside
their Cape Town peers.
